THE LAST 5 YEARS – A BRIEF SYNOPSIS!

The Last Five Years is a musical written by Jason Robert Brown. It premiered at Chicago's Northlight Theatre in 2001 and was then produced Off-Broadway in March 2002.

The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning at the end of the marriage), and Jamie's is told in chronological order (starting just after they first meet). The characters don’t interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.

Cathy is sitting alone lamenting the end of her marriage ("Still Hurting"). We shift to meet Jamie. It is five years earlier and he has just met Cathy. Jamie is overjoyed to be dating outside his Jewish heritage ("Shiksa Goddess").

Cathy and Jamie are in Ohio. It is her birthday and he has come to visit her as she works in a show there ("See I'm Smiling"). She is anxious to fix any problems in their marriage, but she becomes angry when Jamie tells her he must go back early to New York. During breaks in the music, we see a younger Jamie, talking to a literary agent about his book.

Jamie is moving in with Cathy. He comments on how lucky he is that everything is going right for him; his book is being published and his life with Cathy seems too good to be true ("Moving Too Fast"). Elsewhere, Cathy is making a call to her agent: her career isn't going the way she planned it.

Cathy is attending Jamie's book party. She sings about how he ignores her for his writing, but she will always be in love with him ("I'm a Part of That").

Jamie and Cathy celebrate their second Christmas. He tells her a new story he has written about an old tailor named Schmuel and he gives her a Christmas present: a watch, promising to support her as she follows her dreams of acting. ("The Schmuel Song").

Cathy is in Ohio and writing to Jamie. She describes to Jamie her disappointing life in Ohio among her eccentric colleagues ("A Summer in Ohio").

Jamie is sitting with Cathy in Central Park. Jamie proposes to her and, for the first time in the musical, they sing together ("The Next Ten Minutes"). They get married, exchanging vows to stay together forever. Jamie is facing temptation from other women, especially now his career as a writer has escalated ("A Miracle Would Happen").

Cathy, meanwhile, is auditioning for a role ("When You Come Home to Me"). She is getting down about the rejection she faces as an actress and complains to Jamie ("Climbing Uphill").

Jamie speaks to Cathy on the phone, trying to convince her that there is nothing going on with him and his editor, Elise. He wants to celebrate a book review but Cathy refuses to go out. Jamie is fighting with Cathy, trying to get her to listen to him. He accuses her of being unsupportive of his career just because hers is failing. Though his words are harsh, he promises her that he believes in her ("If I Didn't Believe in You").

A younger Cathy is in the car with Jamie, who is going to meet her parents. She tells him about her past relationships and hopes not to end up in a small-town life like her friend from high school ("I Can Do Better Than That"). She asks Jamie to move in with her.

Near the end of the relationship Jamie wakes up beside another woman ("Nobody Needs to Know"). He tries to defend his actions and blames Cathy for destroying his privacy and their relationship. Jamie promises not to lie to this woman and tells her that "I could be in love with someone like you," just as he does to Cathy in "Shiksa Goddess." Cathy is ecstatic after her first date with Jamie. She sings goodbye ("Goodbye Until Tomorrow"). She proclaims that she has been waiting for Jamie her whole life. Simultaneously but five years forward, Jamie sits in their shared apartment writing laments over the relationship ("I Could Never Rescue You"). As Cathy waves Jamie "goodbye until tomorrow", Jamie wishes Cathy simply "goodbye".

The musical style draws on a number of musical genres, including pop, jazz, and classical, klezmer, Latin, Rock, and Folk. The orchestration consists of piano, acoustic guitar, fretless bass, two cellos, one doubling on celesta and tubular bell, and violin, doubling cymbal.

Auditions For The Last Five Years

What To Expect At Auditions

AUDITION INFORMATION

Auditions are by appointment only and will be approximately 5 minutes in duration. Please prepare one (1) complete audition song, which should not be from The Last 5 Years, but should be any contemporary music theatre piece (preferably from a song cycle) from the last 21st Century. Our strongest advice is to possibly pick a song from the Jason Robert Brown catalogue (Songs For a New World, Parade, 13, The Bridges Of Madison County etc) that best represents your finest story-telling capabilities through song and one that sits comfortably in your range. Pick a song that shows off the quality of your voice, in its best tonal setting and shows that you can (most importantly) connect with the lyrical content of the piece.

Our advice is also not to bite off more than you can chew regarding range requirements. The Last 5 Years is very much a conversational piece (as disjointed as the concept may be), and the key requirement to playing Cathy or Jamie is to be able to get the audience to listen intimately. Wowing them with fancy notes is not necessarily the best game plan. Go for story you can tell and connect-with and songs you can control… not big notes.

PLEASE NOTE: You may only be required to sing part of your song. We can learn a lot from you in the first 32 bars! We also want to chat to you and get to know you too! We also may want to run some basic scales for a range test… YES RANGE TEST! URGH! But we need to know what you can do and would rather do it here, than in your song! So, again, you won’t need to push for crazy high notes in your song choice, go for connection.

Be as efficient as possible for us and choose a great starting point that displays the connection you want to show us the most, in the most economical way! Be well prepared when you walk in the room. We want you to do your absolute best and can tell by how prepared you are if you “really want it!”

You need to bring along with you… your sheet music for the audition pianist. Sheet Music only please. No recordings, backing tracks etc. If page turns are required, it is best to place the sheet music in a plastic sleeve folder or display book and it must be in the correct key. We will not be transposing so please make sure you have checked it is accurate. We will also be running some Cathy and Jamie sides in the room and we would like you to look over them and be ready in case we want to hear them from you. The sides will be made available after the information night for you to download and will be marked so you know what sections to learn. These will also be used for call-backs if required.

These sides are…

CATHY – “Still Hurting” from start to Bar 57

JAMIE – “Moving Too Fast” from Bar 82 to the end

SIDES CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM DROPBOX LINKS ABOVE.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Due to the nature of the show and it being a two hander, we are more than happy to audition “couples” that are pushing to go for the show together. We understand that this show is rarely auditioned and may be a dream chance for a couple or for artists who have a very strong history performing together and connection to each other. Should you wish to come into the room together, book times next to each other (we need ten minutes) and then you are more than welcome… you just need to prepare a duet and we will still need a short solo song from each of you. The concept of seeing couples however does not mean we are looking to cast that way and there is a possibility we might want to see one of you with another actor. Casting just one of you is an absolute possibility and we encourage everyone to remain open regarding this and to appreciate the choices and desires of the creative team and how they best see the show moving forward for Geelong audiences. We are happy to see everyone and more than happy to see couples, but we would (fairly) need to know from the outset if you are only interested in doing the show together. Which (also fairly) may of course be a deterrent to casting, if we like the casting options and choices of someone else outside of your duo.

CALL-BACK’S!

WEDNESDAY 3RD JULY – 8:30pm to 10:30pm – CATHY & JAMIE

At the completion of your first vocal audition, (Please remember, the creative team will feel you are either a good fit, or not, based on what coincides with THEIR vision and casting concepts for THIS particular production only… Don’t let previous productions of TL5Y guide your expectations and don’t let a non-call-back get you down. Our casting is very specific, and this will be its own production) … you will have been given material (the sides) to prepare for Auditions and also a side (see link below) for Call-Backs. If we feel the need to run Call-Backs and you are one of the lucky ones to be called-back, be prepared to be at the venue from 8:30pm to 10:30pm on the Wednesday as our process involves everyone in the room, at the same time, so we can mix and match potential actors with each other.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS!

CATHY HIATT – Cathy, Big Time Star, Shiksa Goddess VOICE: Mezzo Soprano + Belt E3 – E5 (Belt to Eb5) STAGE AGE: 25 (minimum) - 30's (Late) (The show is a 5-year relationship) MOVEMENT: Confident Music Theatre Performer DESCRIPTION: Female. All Ethnicities.

He needed to take some time off. Focus on his career. He blew me off with a heartfelt letter, I thought I can do better than that!

Cathy is a struggling actress in her 20’s in NYC who essentially converts (non-Jewish) for love. Concerned over her career, her weight, her relationship… Cathy moves through moods and moments in her life from Shiksa Goddess to Long Distance Relationship to Stepford Wife and Jealous Lover at break-neck pace. Over the course of the musical, she recalls her courtship, marriage and divorce to Jamie, a budding novelist, in backwards chronological order which sets her off on the more challenging negative footing and requires an actress who can connect instantly with the piece. She is someone who wants love, but not in the same way as previous relationships and it requires an actress to help us to WANT to love her too. Never one to blame herself, Cathy is strong, talented, but failing in her career and Jamie’s success is a constant wedge she drives between them.

New York Standard Accent Preferred - in keeping with location & tongue of the writer, Jason Robert Brown.

ARCHETYPES: The Jealous Girl, The Convert, The Never Fault, The Shiksa Goddess, The Stepford Smiler.

JAMIE WELLERSTEIN – Jamie VOICE: Contemp. Music Theatre Baritone/Tenor A2 – Bb4 STAGE AGE: 25 (minimum) - 30's (Late) (The show is a 5-year relationship) MOVEMENT: Confident Music Theatre Performer. DESCRIPTION: Male. All Ethnicities.

" And since I have to be in love with someone. Since I need to be in love with someone. Maybe I could be in love with someone like you...”

Jamie is a budding novelist in his 20’s on the brink of success in NYC, with a Jewish background and heritage. With his career seemingly on track, the only hole in Jamie’s heart is his desire and absolute need to be in love, stay in love and be constantly inspired by love… and what better choice than by falling for the last person his parents would approve of. A Shiksa. Jamie recalls his courtship, marriage and divorce to Cathy in chronological order which gifts the actor the space to grow and roll through the arc to elevation in a slightly less challenging way. In saying that, Jamie has his faults and his bi-polar decisions and actions to play. From Romantic to Cheat, from Brutal Honesty to Unwavering Support, the actor required needs to charm us during his faults and unnerve us during his successful moments.

New York Jewish Accent Preferred - in keeping with location & tongue of the writer, Jason Robert Brown.

ARCHETYPES: The In Love With Love, The Wandering Heart, The Awful Wedded Life, The Documenter.
